This is the decision most people arrive at, and it is usually presented as a spec-sheet fight. It is not. The two chairs are built for different failure modes.

The gap is about 370 g — roughly a full water bottle. If you are carrying the chair on your back, that is the whole argument and the Chair Zero wins it.

The fabric is the part that gets glossed over. The Chair Zero's seat is a thin aramid ripstop chosen for strength-to-weight; the Chair One's is a 600D polyester chosen to take abuse. Both are Helinox's own descriptions. In practice that means the Chair Zero is the one you keep off gravel and sharp stubble, and the Chair One is the one you can drop on a stony pitch for five seasons without thinking about it. If your chair lives in a car boot and gets used carelessly, the heavier chair is not a compromise — it is the correct choice.

What nobody publishes: Helinox does not give comparable packed dimensions or a load rating for the Chair Zero on its own comparison page — it says the Zero "fits into a sleek cinch bag" and the One "packs into a full case", and it rates only the Chair One, at 145 kg. The precise packed volumes and weight limits you will find quoted across review sites come from those reviewers' own measurements, not from Helinox. Treat them as estimates. If you are near a load limit, that uncertainty is the reason to take the Chair One.

The short answer: carrying it more than a kilometre, take the Chair Zero. Everything else — car camping, base camp, long evenings, heavier sitters, rough ground — take the Chair One and spend the 370 g somewhere it buys you more.

How to choose compact camp furniture

Compact camp furniture — a packable chair or small table — trades a little weight for real comfort at camp. It only earns its place if you will use it. For backpackers, a 400–500 g chair is the sweet spot; car campers can carry more for extra comfort.

Is a camp chair worth the weight?

If you sit at camp to cook, eat, and relax, a good chair changes the whole evening for about 500 g. If you only sleep and move on, skip it. Be honest about how you camp. A compact chair is a comfort item, not a survival one, so bring it only when you will use it.

How small does it really pack?

A modern compact chair like the Helinox Chair Zero folds to about the size of a 1-litre bottle and slides into a side pocket. Budget chairs pack a little larger and heavier. Always check the folded length — a chair that will not fit inside your pack often ends up left at home.

Chair, stool, or sit pad?

A full chair with a back gives the most comfort but weighs the most. A three-legged stool is lighter and smaller but tiring for long sits. Do you need a camp table?

A table is optional. It keeps your stove stable and your food off the ground, which is nice at a base camp but rarely worth carrying far. If you car camp or stay put for days, a compact folding table earns its space. For moving trips, cook on flat ground instead.
